Top 5 Things to Know About Magic Bands

Magic Bands are the true keys to the Kingdom on a Walt Disney World vacation. Several years back you accessed your theme park tickets through swipe cards and printed your fast passes while standing in front of a kiosk, but these elements are now a thing of the past thanks to a handy new invention, Magic Bands. Magic Bands are a special coded bracelet that is registered specifically to you for your Disney trip.

The top things you need to know about Magic Bands:

1. Everything you need is now in one band.

Magic Bands are capable of linking your room key (Disney Resort Hotels only), theme park tickets, FastPass+ access, Magical Express transportation (at airport), Photopass, and even your credit card information for food and merchandise if you so choose.

2. They're free for hotel guests.

Not staying on a property? No worries you can still purchase a Magic Band prior to your trip through the Disney Store or on Disney Property. Once you start the process of booking your Disney hotel and theme park tickets, simply access the My Disney Experience portal through the website or app. On the website you are given the opportunity to customize your Magic Band bracelets by choosing a band in a few different color options. You can even have your name printed on the inside of the magic band.

3. They really do store all your FastPass+ selections.

No keeping track of small ticket stubs and no more wondering what time you'll get for a FastPass. Plan you trip in advance by selecting which park you want to visit on each day and then access the available FastPast times for that park. Reservations for FastPasses can be made 60 days in advance of your trip and the system allows you to make 3 reservations per day (more can be made once you utilize your three if there are remaining times left on the day of). I recommend making them as soon as you can so you have first dibs on your times. Once in the park you'll be able to scan your Magic Band when it's your time for the attraction.

4. Magic Bands are customizable!

Once your Magic Bands arrive you can customize them (or you can cancel the free option and purchase a more decorative band from the Disney Store). If you select the free version you will have a few basic colors to choose from. They are given as a one size fits all model, but do have the option for you to peel back part of the band to make it fit smaller wrists.

Ours just arrived last week for my upcoming trip and I selected a glitter vinyl cover to decorate my gray band like Spaceship Earth. What can I say? I'm an Epcot girl all the way. There are so many great shops on Etsy that create unique vinyls to upgrade your Magic Bands. You can check out the Geodome Silver Magic Band Decal I chose and many more fantastic designs through ShopEmilyG on Etsy. Can't wait to wear mine in a couple of weeks!

5. The bands are reusable.

You can continue to use them for trips to come. Just make sure that the Magic Band you plan to use is linked to your account through the code on the back of the band. If you have a band being sent to you through the My Disney Experience site then it has already been linked. They're pretty hardy and snap into place really well so you shouldn't have to worry about them falling off or getting damaged on your trip.
